Three 26-point builds

Allocations checked against tiers, ranks and prerequisites in the beta dataset from Oct 8, 2026. Support and defensive options have specific roles; they aren't equal in duel damage.

Subtlety / Preparation · 4/0/22

First candidate for CC and recovering defensive resources: stealth, setting up windows and resets.

Assassination: Malice 4/5.

Subtlety: Camouflage 5/5; Master of Deception 3/3; Opportunity 2/2; Elusiveness 2/2; Dirty Tricks 2/2; Initiative 1/3; Ghostly Strike 1/1; Premeditation 1/1; Serrated Blades 3/3; Preparation 1/1; Hemorrhage 1/1.

No 31-point capstone. Preparation doesn't reset arbitrary abilities: check its tooltip list.

Assassination / Mutilate · 21/5/0

Compare dagger and poison pressure; Cold Blood stays separate so you choose the window.

Assassination: Malice 5/5; Ruthlessness 3/3; Murder 2/2; Lethality 5/5; Vile Poisons 4/5; Cold Blood 1/1; Mutilate 1/1.

Combat: Improved Sinister Strike 2/2; Improved Eviscerate 3/3.

Mutilate requires its gear and conditions. No Venom, Preparation or Blade Flurry.

Combat / mobility · 5/21/0

Compare frontal pressure and improved Sprint; Blade Flurry can help with two nearby enemies.

Assassination: Malice 5/5.

Combat: Improved Sinister Strike 2/2; Lightning Reflexes 3/5; Deflection 3/3; Precision 3/3; Endurance 2/2; Improved Sprint 2/2; Riposte 1/1; Improved Kick 2/2; Flawless Execution 1/1; Dual Wield Specialization 1/5; Blade Flurry 1/1.

No Adrenaline Rush. Frontal damage doesn't replace CC against casters.

18 copyable macros

Each macro labels its keys: Shift = your focus, mouseover = the unit under your cursor, Alt = yourself. The focus macro and other shared macros are in the macro guide, along with instructions for creating them.

Kick on focus

Can interrupt if you reach the casting target in time. Requires range and energy.

Shift: focusMouseover: enemy

#showtooltip Kick
/cast [mod:shift,@focus,harm,nodead][nomod,@mouseover,harm,nodead][nomod,harm,nodead] Kick
Gouge without auto-attacking

Stops your attack before CC. Requires the right position and target; poisons or bleeds can break it.

#showtooltip Gouge
/stopattack
/cast [harm,nodead] Gouge
Sap on focus or mouseover

Requires stealth and a valid Sap target. Doesn't find hidden opponents or bypass combat restrictions.

Shift: focusMouseover: enemy

#showtooltip Sap
/stopattack
/cast [mod:shift,@focus,harm,nodead][nomod,@mouseover,harm,nodead][nomod,harm,nodead] Sap

#showtooltip Kidney Shot
/cast [mod:shift,@focus,harm,nodead][nomod,@mouseover,harm,nodead][nomod,harm,nodead] Kidney Shot
Vanish without auto-attacking

Stops your attack and attempts Vanish. Requires the reagent if the client demands it; DoTs and detection still matter.

#showtooltip Vanish
/stopattack
/cast Vanish
Stealth

Separate button to enter stealth when appropriate. Doesn't automatically combine Vanish with an opener.

#showtooltip Stealth
/cast Stealth
Sprint

Deliberate mobility; check whether your build has Improved Sprint for its extra benefit.

#showtooltip Sprint
/cast Sprint
Evasion

Physical defense as described by its tooltip. Not a universal answer to spells or attacks it can't avoid.

Cold Blood

Requires the Assassination talent. Separate button so you choose which attack consumes it.

/cast Cold Blood
Premeditation

Requires the Subtlety talent and its stealth conditions. Doesn't mean free points on any target.

#showtooltip Sinister Strike
/cast [mod:shift,@focus,harm,nodead][nomod,@mouseover,harm,nodead][nomod,harm,nodead] Sinister Strike
Eviscerate

Direct-damage finisher. Choose how many combo points to spend; macros don't evaluate your execute damage.

Shift: focusMouseover: enemy

#showtooltip Eviscerate
/cast [mod:shift,@focus,harm,nodead][nomod,@mouseover,harm,nodead][nomod,harm,nodead] Eviscerate
Rupture

Shift: focusMouseover: enemy

#showtooltip Rupture
/cast [mod:shift,@focus,harm,nodead][nomod,@mouseover,harm,nodead][nomod,harm,nodead] Rupture
Blade Flurry

Duels against all nine classes

First build to test in each matchup. Identify your opponent's spec, race and gear: class alone isn't enough. Practice several rounds before changing points; the suggestions below are tactical proposals, not measured results.

Against Warrior

First test: Subtlety / Preparation · 4/0/22.

Their threat is keeping you in melee. Watch Charge/Intercept, Hamstring and shield swaps; an available Berserker Rage can shut down a fear. A brief gap doesn't mean a safe reset.

Armor and physical counters reduce the effectiveness of trading head-on. Subtlety lets you compare CC and resets; save defenses for their pressure.

Against Paladin

First test: Subtlety / Preparation · 4/0/22.

Separate their immunity, CC and healing windows. Save an answer for the next heal after they've spent a defensive; don't pour all your offensive resources into an active immunity.

Force a defensive before spending your best offense. Keep Kick for heals; Gouge needs to buy real time without damage breaking it.

Against Hunter

First test: Subtlety / Preparation · 4/0/22.

Range and pet are two separate threats. Watch slows and traps; CC'ing the pet doesn't remove the Hunter's damage. Avoid chasing in a straight line through prepared ground.

Open with a plan to stay connected. Save Sprint and CC for their escape; watch the pet and effects preventing Vanish.

Against Rogue

First test: Subtlety / Preparation · 4/0/22.

The opener can chain CC; manage your CC break and defensives to survive the dangerous stretch. DoTs make resets harder, but can also break your own CC if applied carelessly.

A duel of openers and resources. Don't reflexively spend Evasion and Vanish in the same stretch; save energy to capitalize on CC.

Against Priest

First test: Subtlety / Preparation · 4/0/22.

They can dispel and recover health while draining your mana. Choose which heal to interrupt instead of answering every cast; pressure without resources can play into their attrition plan.

Apply pressure with Kick ready for a heal; watch Psychic Scream and the shield. Plan around pending damage so you don't break your own Gouge.

Against Shaman

First test: Subtlety / Preparation · 4/0/22.

Identify totems and shocks before committing. Don't hard-cast a long heal into an available Earth Shock without creating space or baiting the interrupt. Prioritize totems that actually interfere with your plan.

Pressure heals and pick totems by effect. Kick requires melee range: don't waste it after they've already escaped your reach.

Against Mage

First test: Subtlety / Preparation · 4/0/22.

Track Blink, roots and, if their build has them, Ice Block/Cold Snap. Don't commit your entire offense around one root when they can create another gap. Polymorph can give them recovery time.

Don't spend Sprint before seeing Blink or the next root. Preparation only resets abilities listed in its tooltip.

Against Warlock

First test: Subtlety / Preparation · 4/0/22.

Respect Fear, DoTs and demon utility. A Voidwalker, Succubus or Felhunter changes the plan; don't assume level 36 Spell Lock or that every build has Soul Link.

DoTs make resets harder, and a demon can ruin CC. Kick the relevant cast; don't expect Vanish to automatically cleanse you.

Against Druid

First test: Subtlety / Preparation · 4/0/22.

Expect shapeshifting, heals and mobility. Their current form reveals immediate options, not their whole build. Don't chase without resources while they recover; interrupting a heal in caster form can open a window.

Stop the heal during their caster window and save mobility for distance changes. Don't chase alone while bleeds drain your health.

BGs and open world

In BGs, interrupt heals and contest objectives with support; don't turn every opener into an endless chase. In the open world, check poisons and escape tools; a reset means getting out of danger and dealing with DoTs.

In BGs, play objectives and coordinate CC with your team. Before spending a CC break, distinguish CC you must break from CC you can sit. In the open world, check terrain, allies and escape routes. Tournament rules don't automatically apply to these activities.

Gear and BiS reference

Build-appropriate weapons first: daggers for Mutilate and your attacks' requirements. Then compare agility, health, attack power, crit and hit without abandoning survival.

There's no universal duel BiS list here: it changes with build, opponents and restrictions. The linked guide helps compare level 30 mechanics and gear; its damage focus doesn't automatically determine the best PvP setup.

What macros improve

Stopattack prevents your next hit from ruining CC. Focus lets you Kick without losing your victim; separating Vanish, Sprint and Preparation avoids spending all three for no reason.

Plan your opener, CC and reset. Pool energy before a stun to capitalize on it; Gouge and Sap don't tolerate careless damage. Don't expect Blind: it's beyond this level.
